What is EPDM rubber?

Ethylene propylene diene rubber – EPDM is a terpolymer. It is obtained from ethylene-propylene-diene monomers. This rubber is produced by the action of the third monomer. It is crosslinked in the sulfur or peroxide vulcanization process.

EPDM rubber - An elastomer with excellent mechanical resistance

EPDM rubber has an exceptionally good ability to reverse deformation under the influence of mechanical forces. The deformation is created while maintaining the continuity structure of the material. This property does not change even in the face of temperatures up to +110 degrees Celsius. EPDM rubber remains flexible even at a temperature of 40 degrees Celsius below zero. In addition, EPDM rubber stands out by its low elasticity. Therefore, it is also abrasion resistant compared to other types of rubbers.

It has excellent aging resistance. It is found in industry, construction, and in applications in the marine environment and more generally outdoors.

Applications of EPDM rubber

EPDM is one of the most versatile rubber materials. Thanks to its numerous properties, ethylene-propylene-diene rubber – EPDM is used in many applications.

In the automotive industry, it is used to produce window and door seals, braking element seals, shock absorbers and bumpers.

In the building sector, EPDM is found in sealing profiles for plastic joinery, hydraulic hoses, cable covers and roofs. Ethylene-propylene-diene rubber – EPDM is particularly appreciated mainly in the insulation of roofs and terraces, in order to guarantee waterproofing and safety.

In the food sector or the water industry, it is used as a seal.

Generally speaking, EPDM is also a material of choice for shock absorption and vibration damping.
